Driving sustainable progress: PHX Ireland’s latest environmental initiatives

At PHX Ireland, our commitment to sustainability isn’t just a long‑term ambition, it’s central to how we operate today. Across our organisation, we’re investing in innovative solutions that reduce emissions, optimise energy use and minimise waste. These actions support healthier, more sustainable futures for our communities, our partners and our people.

Here’s a look at the key initiatives currently underway.

Expanding our renewable energy footprint

We’re continuing to advance major renewable energy investments, including the upcoming planning submission for a 1,987 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Magna Park. This project represents an important step in our transition to clean energy, enabling us to generate a greater share of our electricity onsite and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Decarbonising our fleet with next‑generation fuels

Fleet sustainability continues to grow as a key priority. This year, we trialled Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) across compatible United Drug fleet vehicles and achieved emissions reductions of up to 90% compared with traditional diesel.

Based on these strong results, TCP Homecare have now fully transitioned to HVO for all suitable vehicles. This offers an effective decarbonisation solution in areas where electric vehicles are not yet practical.

We’ve completed an upgrade to the EV charging network at our Magna Park facility, strengthening our commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. The investment increases charging capacity and efficiency, making it easier for colleagues, visitors and partners to power their vehicles on-site.

Improving energy efficiency across our operations

Energy efficiency remains a core focus across PHX Ireland. Our latest upgrades include:

  • Replacing three 750 kW gas boilers with high‑efficiency modulating burners, lowering gas consumption and reducing emissions.
  • Optimising settings on site‑wide heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning (HVAC) systems following a comprehensive review. This has ensured variable speed drives (VSDs) run as efficiently as possible, reducing electrical demand while maintaining comfort and performance.

These improvements are part of our broader strategy to cut operational emissions and drive long-term efficiencies across our network.

Reducing single‑use plastics in healthcare settings

In support of more responsible resource use, TCP Homecare has moved from single‑use plastic aprons to HaPPEE compostable aprons. This transition significantly reduces waste sent to landfill and aligns with the growing demand for more sustainable products across healthcare environments.

Industry recognition for meaningful impact

We’re proud to share that both our HVO fleet rollout and our HaPPEE apron initiative have been shortlisted for the 2026 Green Awards Ireland in the Green Healthcare Provider category. This recognition reflects the dedication and innovative thinking of our teams, who continue to deliver tangible environmental improvements across PHX Ireland.

Building a sustainable future

PHX Ireland remains committed to accelerating our sustainability journey through smart investment, collaboration and innovation. These initiatives demonstrate the meaningful steps we’re taking today, and our determination to keep driving positive change for the communities we serve.
