A day in the life: Community Nurse Laura Moriarty

A day in the life: Community Nurse Laura Moriarty

As part of our A Day in the Life series, we’re shining a light on #ourpeople who make a real difference across our organisation every day. In this edition, we meet Laura Moriarty, Community Nurse at TCP Homecare.

1. How would you summarise your role in the business?

I’m one of the community nurses based in the West. We provide healthcare to people in their own homes and health centres across the west of Ireland.

2. Before coming to work, what does your morning look like?

My morning involves two small kids so it can be hectic getting everyone ready and out the door by 8 o’clock! After offloading the tiny dictators I will check in with the team by email to see if there are any changes to the day and then head off to see my first patient.

3. When you arrive to work, how do you kickstart your day?

Caffeine in any form.

4. On your journey home, do you listen to podcasts, music or are you enjoying some peace and quiet? If so, which podcast/song?

I love listening to music and podcasts, my car is never quiet. My favourite podcast is called giggly squad which is two girls in their 30s talking about all things pop culture. They are hilarious and I have cried laughing more times than I can count! I’ve also listened to more books in the past year than I’ve read in the last 10!

5. What’s your favourite aspect of your job?

I love the variety of the clinical work day to day and all the lovely people you meet along the way. I love being able to manage my own workload while also having the constant support of the team behind you.

6. What is one thing you wish you could have told your younger self before embarking on your chosen career path?

Nursing is so much bigger than the hospital ward, if one role doesn’t suit you or this particular time in your life then there are always so many options as a nurse.

7. Can you share one piece of advice for a new starter about to join the business?

Ask all the questions! The team are amazing and if someone doesn’t have an answer for you they will find someone who does.

8. What does being collaborative mean to you, and how do you live that value at work?

Collaboration to me means working in partnership. These partnerships happen between patients, their families, carers and a huge range of other healthcare professionals.  Collaboration in this role involves open communication, the ability to listen to different perspectives and adapt our practices based on input/feedback. Sharing our knowledge and skills with one another and striving for more we can achieve better outcomes for our patients. I try to demonstrate this by building positive relationships with both patients and colleagues alike. I try my best to offer support to others when workloads are busy and feel confident to reach out for that same support when needed.
